Happy Mother’s Day! For all the moms with fur babies, moms who don’t have enough “me time” to workout, and for all the moms with teens preparing for college, this show is for you!

FIRST GUEST: Dr. Robyn Barbiers, President of the Anti-Cruelty Society

I’m not a mom per se, but I do have fur babies in my life! Here’s a great event for all the other fur baby moms out there. The Anti-Cruelty Society’s annual Bark in the Park is back, and in a brand new location this year: Soldier Field!

Get a team together, bring your dog, or just come by yourself for their annual 5k run/walk on Saturday, May 21st at 9:00 am. Pre-register now at barkinthepark.org, or register the day of at 7:00 am at Soldier Field.

Proceeds benefit the animals at the Society, which has been providing educational programs, foster and adoption programs, training classes, medical services, and more to homeless and mistreated animals in the Chicagoland area since 1899.

Can’t make it to Bark in the Park but still want to help? Make an online donation at anticruetly.org, or adopt a dog or cat! You’ll find adoptable cuties all over the city and suburbs from the Society, including puppies at Lambs Farm in Libertyville, dogs and cats at the Everyday Adoption Center in the South Loop Petsmart, and cats at five different Petsmart stores across the area.

Second Guest: Bill Fabrocini, P.T., Clinical Specialist in Orthopedic Physical Therapy and Sports Performance Training Coach

Moms are busy people. They always take care of others before they take care of themselves, leaving little to no “me” time. By the time moms are free, they’re exhausted– forget that workout! But you don’t need any fancy gadgets, apps, or equipment to achieve results! In fact, Bill says there are a few “sacred” exercises– 25 of them actually, including things like squats, lunges, and planks– and if you can master those, you’ll be set for a healthy and fit lifestyle!

He also explains the many benefits of aerobic activity. And we’re not talking about a one-hour sweat-fest at the gym five nights a week (unless you’re into that, which is cool, too). But even something as simple as a half-hour walk a few times a week can improve your mood, reduce stress, rebuild strength, reduce disease, and even make you smarter!

But what if you’ve been pretty inactive for a while and don’t know where to start? Bill explains how to prepare for an increase in physical activity so you don’t risk injury or disappointment. And remember, it’s not just about cardio; strength-training and weight-bearing exercises will provide you with a strong core and posture while also growing bones, a great benefit for anyone at risk for things like Osteoporosis.

Everything is covered in the new book Younger Next Year, The Exercise Program: Use the Power of Exercise to Reverse Aging and Stay Strong, Fit, and Sexy, available on Amazon or through youngernextyear.com.

Third Guest: Larry Berger, Yale alum and creator of Up Your Score: The Underground Guide to Outsmarting the SAT

Moms, are your teens prepping for college? For many high school students, the SAT’s are right around the corner, and the test has changed quite a bit since last spring.

Larry, former Yale student who aced the SAT’s, shares some of these changes to help students prepare for the standardized test. Some things to expect:

  • Wrong answers are no longer penalized
  • No more obscure vocabulary
  • The essay portion is optional
  • More reading sections
  • More visual graphs and charts

Learn more or get the guidebook at upyourscore.com.

Weekend Journal airs Sunday mornings at 6:30 on US99.5 and 6:00 on US99.5 HD2 The Wolf.
